Covington police have released the name of a man who died in their custody Wednesday after a confrontation which involved the use of a taser.
52 year old Leroy Hughes of Covington collapsed after an incident with officers yesterday.
Police were called to
Highland Avenue and Jefferson Street about 11 a.m. for reports of a man waiving a gun. Investigators say Hughes started yelling at officers and threw a box of bullets at them when they tried to arrest him. That's when police used a taser.
Officers said it took three taser attempts in order to subdue Hughes. He appeared to be okay after he was tackled, but collapsed a short time later.
The gun Hughes was carrying turned out to be loaded. Five police officers are on administrative leave while an investigation is completed.
An autopsy is being done to determine Hughes' exact cause of death.
